Umami Mart is a curation of bar tools and glassware from Japan, as well as a bottle shop dedicated to sake and Japanese beer.
Q. What inspired you to start your business?
Umami Mart sprouted into this world as an international food + drink blog in 2007. Over the years, it has grown into a Japanese kitchen and barware importing business and bottle shop.

Functional design, quality, and service are all a part of the Umami Mart philosophy, reflected in every facet of the business.
Q. What’s the best thing about doing business in Oakland?
The community! We have been fortunate to join a strong community of small businesses + makers and artists. Our regulars and local clientele have all been so supportive. Oakland invited us in with open arms in 2012 and we never intend to leave.
Q. What are some of your favorite local businesses in Oakland?
Our neighbors, Marion and Rose Workshop, Maple Street Denim, Manifesta, Beast Mode, Crown Nine, the Trappist, everyone at Swan’s Market, Ratto’s. We also love Camino, B-Dama, Abura-Ya, Oaktown Spice Shop, Red Bay Coffee, Bicycle Coffee, Roast Co, and so many others we can’t name them all.
Q. What’s the one thing Oakland offers that you couldn’t live without?
Not to sound like a broken record, but it’s all the amazing people here who support and promote us. We couldn’t do it without them!
