Baba's House

About the Business

😎 Multi-floor: Restaurant / AAPI Snacks + Bottles Shop / Immersive Event Space / Mahjong Den

Baba’s House, a vibrant community space in the heart of Downtown Oakland, has been a beacon for AANHPI (Asian American, Native Hawaiian, and Pacific Islander) culture and BIPOC (Black, Indigenous, and People of Color) communities for the past three years. Founded by Jenn Lui and Alan Chen, both first-generation Bay Area natives, Baba’s House reflects their unique experiences and creative vision. The space has been instrumental in building a strong community centered around the Asian American experience in the Bay Area. Their mission is to pave the way for new cultural expressions while honoring and preserving their roots. Baba’s House is now expanding its innovative approach to culture into the culinary realm with the launch of an Asian American reimagined kitchen.

They have been offering some of their favorite and highly curated AANHPI snacks and beverages (such as unique Lay’s & KitKat flavors from Asia, local beverage brands like Mizo & wildwonder) and this new venture promises to deliver flavors deeply rooted in cultural heritage, with a fresh, local twist to keep the offerings authentic. They are collaborating with Chef Eman Garcia, a Filipino American chef with strong background in Japanese cuisine. He’s been in the industry for 15 years and his focus is reimagining nostalgic dishes from the course of his life.

The new menu features reimagined staples that utilize our favorite local vendors such as our HOT BOI Dumplings – a tantalizing dish that brings together bold flavors and textures. These perfectly pan-fried dumplings are served atop a bed of crisp shredded cabbage, adding a refreshing crunch to every bite. Drizzled with our house-made Kewpie mayo and a touch of lemon zest, the dumplings offer a delightful balance of creamy and citrusy notes. We add locally made HOT BOI chili oil to round out the dish (which is available in our snack shop).

For those looking for a heartier option, we offer an optional side of fluffy rice to complete the meal. Additionally, Baba’s House will introduce a rotating specials menu, pairing delectable dishes with engaging community events, ensuring that every visit is a unique and flavorful experience to remember.
