What does your business offer and why should people check it out?
OAACC’s mission is to strengthen Oakland’s Black business community. The UpLift Black Pop Up Experience features Black makers, designers, and retailers to increase their exposure and revenue while creating community.

What are a few of your favorite businesses in downtown Oakland? Why?
alaMAr, Calavera, Southern Cafe, Lungomare, Miss Ollies, Geoffrey’s Inner Circle, Suya Grill – All Black-owned businesses we support. We also like are Agave Oakland.

Why should you attend this event?
It is more than just another pop-up experience, UPLIFT is a curated space that showcases a vibrant environment of women’s, men’s, kid’s, accessories, objects, and much more made by local Black makers and artists.

What does your business offer and why should people check it out?
McMullen is an Uptown luxury concept store known for bringing designers from around the world and supporting manufacturing in areas where they can positively impact communities, promoting positivity, and female empowerment.

Known for cultivating fresh fashion talent, Sherri has developed a reputation for carrying emerging and desired designers before they achieve national recognition. McMullen carries brands such as Ulla Johnson, Tibi, Rick Owens, Ganni, Mansur Gavriel, Adam Lippes, Nomia, Jacquemus, Marion Parke, Proenza Schouler, Simon Miller, Maryam Nassir Zadeh, Kamperett, Rejina Pyo, Sea NYC, and Peter Petrov.

What inspired you to start your business? Why did you choose Oakland?
I have always had a love for fashion and knew I wanted to open my own store even while working in corporate retail. I was inspired by the need for a luxury boutique in Oakland and after living here for several years I wanted to offer customers a unique shopping experience that they would not be able to find anywhere in the bay. I am committed to supporting other local Oakland businesses and specifically support Oakland charities that focus on women, children, and the arts.

What are a few of your favorite businesses in downtown Oakland? Why?
We love supporting our neighboring businesses and frequently visit Firebrand for their amazing coffee and pastries, Dosa for the best Tikki Masala bowl, Vessel Art Gallery, and Calavera who has amazing cocktails and Mexican inspired cuisine.

What inspires you to go to work every day?
Working with my incredible team, getting to work with clients that have supported us for years, and my love for cutting-edge fashion.

What do you love most about the community in Oakland?
I am forever inspired by the amount of culture the Oakland community thrives in and the fact that everyone is always willing to work together as a whole.

It’s an early spooktacular evening of community, music, and birthday celebration for Sterling James.

We are closing out the 3rd Thursdays at Latham Square 2018 season celebrating Happy Born Day for the Bay Area’s favorite radio personality with soul – Sterling James!

It promises to be a spooktacular evening of off the charts music, vendors selling unique, handmade items, a specialty drink in honor of Sterling, and most of all a community vibe.

Jazz Mafia’s Heaviest Feather – bringing us a distinct sound rooted in its five brass instruments, mixing those organic sounds with heavy EDM, hip-hop, rock, and world music. Soulful vocals are often added on top, and it all comes together to create something fresh, eclectic, and genre-defying. Heaviest Feather recently premiered its “Tribute to the Ladies of Hip Hop” in January of 2018 in Jazz Mafia’s monthly Live Mixtape series.

Brass Mafia – is a New Orleans/Bay Area fusion band, who puts a strong emphasis on heavy backbeats, creative improvisation and a unique mix of songs and arrangements. The Brass Mafia includes trombone, trumpet, saxes, drums and most importantly TUBA! But while the band is based on a 100-year-old tradition, the group’s sound incorporates music from many different decades and continents, playing a wide variety of originals and unexpected mashups, with frequent rapper and vocalists guests.

DJ Lady Fingaz – as a Dj, she mixes a variety of genres accompanied by an array of showstopping turntablism and live production this southern belle knows how to rock a party!” Lady Fingaz joined the collective Females Wit Funk, which features the top female turntablists from around the world.

Music, Music, and more Music: As always, Art & Soul has an awesome mix of music over a two day period! There are five stages: Main Stage, Gospel Stage, Soul Plaza Stage, Oaktown Jams Stage, and West Coast Blues Society Stage all with a fantastic lineup of popular artists and hot, local talent such as: Alphabet Rockers, Jazz Mafia Bay Revue, Pointer Sisters, Martin Luther, and Kev Choice on the Main stage. Aliya Hall, Oakland Interfaith Gospel Choir, Terrance Kelly on the Gospel Stage. Turf Battle and World/Urban Dance Showcase on the Soul Plaza Stage. New this year – live Salsa and dancing with Mario y su TimbeKO band on the Oaktown James Stage. Lastly, Oakland Blues Divas, the Caravan of All Stars and more on the West Coast Blues Society Stage! Visit the website ahead of time to find who you want to see and when they will be onstage. Arrive to the stage early for a seat or a good spot to groove to the music.

Eats, Eats, and More Eats: When you are feeling hungry at the festival, no need to be concerned as there are plenty of options: from Southern bites to Creole plates to Filipino lumpia to Indian fair to good old classic, american food. The hardest part will be making room to taste a little bit of everything – so buddy up and go halfsies on twice as many bomb bites. Bonus tip: don’t just settle for your closest food vendor because you are starving and want food NOW, do a walkthrough first to see all of the different offerings. Remember, help Oakland go green and compost your food service items in composting bins located around the festival grounds. In addition to all the great food, there will be local wines, craft beer and spirits.

Family Fun: Art & Soul is all about family fun! There will be kid-friendly carnival rides, a petting zoo, interactive art and other great activities, making it super exciting for kids. Plan ahead and identify a meeting place just in case you get separated. Also, be sure to point out Art & Soul staff and security to your kids so they know who to reach out to for help. But most of all be sure to have FUN!

Think like a Scout – Be Prepared: Summertime in Oakland can be unpredictable. Be ready for it all by packing sunscreen, layers, and a reusable water vessel you can refill at water stations. And don’t forget to don some cool shades representing The Town. Be sure to pick some up at Oakland Central’s booth #102 across from City Hall and learn about all the things to do in Oakland while you’re there!

Location, Location, Location-Designate a Meet-up Spot: Festivals are more fun with friends. To avoid texting or calling them during the event, pick a designated spot ahead of time and reserve your phone battery for IG stories and Snaps (don’t forget to tag #OaklandCentral in all your festival fun!). Here are the main entrance locations and key landmarks:

14th Street & Broadway: Walgreens, Downtown Wine Merchants, and Rite Aid. These locations border the corner of 14th & Broadway.

16th Street & San Pablo: End of San Pablo near the Bruce Beasley statue

Promenade beside City Center West Garage (off Martin Luther King Jr. Way between 12th and 14th Street

Get there Quickly and Conveniently – Take Transit: Avoid the driving/parking blues and take public transit – BART, Amtrak, AC Transit, SF Bay Ferry, or try Ford’s new GoBike bike share program. If you ride your own bike, there will be free attended bike parking service available both days at the 14th Street & Broadway festival entrances.

With three wins under their belts, the Golden State Warriors lead the NBA Finals 3-0 against the Cavs. Let’s get together and cheer them on as they face the Cavs in Cleveland for Game 4 on Friday, June 8th.

OAKHELLA and Oakland Central are teaming up to host FREE NBA Finals watch parties for Game 3 and Game 4 on 9th Street (between Broadway and Washington) in the heart of Old Oakland. The festivities will include kids activities and games, live DJs, a halftime performance and much more!
