Oakland Co-Working Space The Lab
The Lab Oakland Co-Working space

ACTIVITIES

www.engagementlab.org

The Lab [Oakland] is a co-working space where change makers, non-profits, and visionaries can come together to collaborate, be inspired by each other, and build networks that feed efforts to build a more just and healthy world.

Our Lab partners include social change leaders and individuals co-working in our open workspace, organizations (like 350.org and Avaaz) collaborating in our private offices, and community members sharing skills and ideas in our event space, through everything from lunchtime talks to happy hours and weekend hackathons.

The Lab is more than just a co-working facility. It’s designed as a space for community building and experimentation –– and we are always looking for new partners and creative new ideas.

Q. What inspired you to start your business?
The Lab was created by the social change accelerator Citizen Engagement Lab (CEL), which incubates social justice startups, runs experiments, and builds networks for collective action. Providing a physical space for collaboration and experimentation is a natural extension of CEL’s core mission: to support and grow cutting-edge leaders and movements that have the power to change the world.

Right now, in particular, Oakland is an exciting place. It’s having a resurgence of life that you can feel everywhere.

Q. What are some of your favorite local businesses in Oakland?
We love Modern Cafe right across the street, Oaklandish is great for last minute gifts, and Anula’s Cafe is the best hole-in-the-wall lunch spot, with the sweetest of people.

Q. What’s the one thing Oakland offers that you couldn’t live without?
We chose this spot because we want to be right in the middle of things. Frank Ogawa Plaza is the hub of activism in this city; we can see protests on issues like police brutality from our offices and we like it that we can join, tweet, support, and be inspired by our greater community of social justice advocates, right outside our door.
