What inspired you to start your business? Why did you choose Oakland?
I grew up in Lafayette and used to buy homebrewing supplies in Berkeley at Oak Barrel. After years of homebrewing, I developed a recipe for a beer brewed with yerba mate. I took it to market and later opened a brewpub in San Francisco. We decided to open another brewpub in Oakland because of the rich art, music, food and drink culture.

“We brew small batches of fresh, exciting, and experimental beers. Our inspiration comes from far and wide, but our beers are deeply rooted here. Our approach is unconventional but our work is accessible and friendly: Adventurous brews for curious drinkers.”

Who’s your favorite Oakland-based visual artist or performer?
We’ve loved hosting Rob Ewing’s cast of jazz characters every Friday night. East Bay Brass Band brings so much energy whenever they play too!

What are your favorite things to do in Oakland? Why?
Walk around the lake and listen to live music.

What do you love most about community in Oakland?
There’s a great pool of talented workers to draw from – we’ve got a great team! I also appreciate public transit, it’s so easy for employees and customers to come to our business. The community has been very welcoming as well – many neighboring business owners have given me great advice and support.
