www.artandsouloakland.com

Music, Music, and more Music: As always, Art & Soul has an awesome mix of music over a two day period! There are five stages: Main Stage, Gospel Stage, Soul Plaza Stage, Oaktown Jams Stage, and West Coast Blues Society Stage all with a fantastic lineup of popular artists and hot, local talent such as: Alphabet Rockers, Jazz Mafia Bay Revue, Pointer Sisters, Martin Luther, and Kev Choice on the Main stage. Aliya Hall, Oakland Interfaith Gospel Choir, Terrance Kelly on the Gospel Stage. Turf Battle and World/Urban Dance Showcase on the Soul Plaza Stage. New this year – live Salsa and dancing with Mario y su TimbeKO band on the Oaktown James Stage. Lastly, Oakland Blues Divas, the Caravan of All Stars and more on the West Coast Blues Society Stage! Visit the website ahead of time to find who you want to see and when they will be onstage. Arrive to the stage early for a seat or a good spot to groove to the music.

Eats, Eats, and More Eats: When you are feeling hungry at the festival, no need to be concerned as there are plenty of options: from Southern bites to Creole plates to Filipino lumpia to Indian fair to good old classic, american food. The hardest part will be making room to taste a little bit of everything – so buddy up and go halfsies on twice as many bomb bites. Bonus tip: don’t just settle for your closest food vendor because you are starving and want food NOW, do a walkthrough first to see all of the different offerings. Remember, help Oakland go green and compost your food service items in composting bins located around the festival grounds. In addition to all the great food, there will be local wines, craft beer and spirits.

Family Fun: Art & Soul is all about family fun! There will be kid-friendly carnival rides, a petting zoo, interactive art and other great activities, making it super exciting for kids. Plan ahead and identify a meeting place just in case you get separated. Also, be sure to point out Art & Soul staff and security to your kids so they know who to reach out to for help. But most of all be sure to have FUN!

Think like a Scout – Be Prepared: Summertime in Oakland can be unpredictable. Be ready for it all by packing sunscreen, layers, and a reusable water vessel you can refill at water stations. And don’t forget to don some cool shades representing The Town. Be sure to pick some up at Oakland Central’s booth #102 across from City Hall and learn about all the things to do in Oakland while you’re there!

Location, Location, Location-Designate a Meet-up Spot: Festivals are more fun with friends. To avoid texting or calling them during the event, pick a designated spot ahead of time and reserve your phone battery for IG stories and Snaps (don’t forget to tag #OaklandCentral in all your festival fun!). Here are the main entrance locations and key landmarks:

14th Street & Broadway: Walgreens, Downtown Wine Merchants, and Rite Aid. These locations border the corner of 14th & Broadway.

16th Street & San Pablo: End of San Pablo near the Bruce Beasley statue

Promenade beside City Center West Garage (off Martin Luther King Jr. Way between 12th and 14th Street

Get there Quickly and Conveniently – Take Transit: Avoid the driving/parking blues and take public transit – BART, Amtrak, AC Transit, SF Bay Ferry, or try Ford’s new GoBike bike share program. If you ride your own bike, there will be free attended bike parking service available both days at the 14th Street & Broadway festival entrances.

So, go out and make it a GREAT day at Art & Soul. For more information on what to do in Downtown Oakland visit Explore page and ‘Like’ our Facebook page.
