16th Annual Musical Tribute Honoring Dr. Martin Luther King

Oakland Scottish Rite Center

Sunday, January 14, 2018, 7pm

In the Name of Love, Oakland’s Annual Musical Tribute to Dr. King, is proud to present “Songs of Change” highlighting five outstanding vocalists including Nicolas Bearde, Kim Nalley, Tiffany Austin, Amikaeyla Gaston and Jessica Lá Rel with Tammy Hall on piano, Marcus Shelby on bass, Allison Miller on drums, Adam Theis on horns and Terrence Brewer on guitar.

The powerful 65-voice Oakland Interfaith Gospel Choir and the 300-voice Living Jazz Children’s Project will also perform. Dana King will serve as Mistress of Ceremonies and the Oakland Citizen Humanitarian Award will be presented to Wendy Jackson, an outstanding Oakland citizen. The 2018 MLK Tribute will provide a platform for a one-time exciting collective, creative experience meant to inspire hope, celebrate Oakland’s cultural history, and highlight the power of music to spur positive change.

Our 16th Annual Tribute, which will support the Living Jazz Children’s Project (a free music education project for Oakland public elementary schools) promises to be a profound celebration of civil rights and an amazing evening of music. For tickets and information please visit livingjazz.org/mlktribute or call Living Jazz, 510-858-5313

Tell us why attendees will love this event.
East Bay residents look forward to the MLK Tribute each year as a way to honor Dr. King’s legacy, experience a creative, joyful collective experience and to support free music education in Oakland public elementary schools.

What inspired the event?
Recognizing that Oakland, one of the country’s most diverse cities, did not have a non-denominational musical tribute to Dr. King, in 2002, Living Jazz decided to provide one for the city. the event is designed to to celebrate and honor, through music, one of the greatest humanitarians of our time- Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. and to provide a showcase for our public school children and outstanding local talent.

1100 Broadway

October 6 & 7, 2017, shows at 8pm & 9pm

The Right To Be Believed uses the gravity-defying art form of aerial dance—performers navigating vertical urban landscapes with ropes and harnesses—to elevate female voices and call attention to the legal, social, and professional constraints that disempower women.
